Hark! The about page has finally been updated. 2/3 years after I meant to do it. I’m still tweaking but it’s a start.
Loads on the last month or so (can’t find time to sit down, though I’m sitting as I write this but you know what I mean). More frequent posting will resume soon and I’m working on my next Podcast Mix so stay tune-d.

So earlier this week, we got a more up-to-date look at Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Some stuff was the same as the preview we got at last year’s WWDC but there was some more info on hand this year. It’s hard to judge something until you’ve actually used it but the OS certainly looks impressive. Some of the new feature’s I’m looking forward to are the new desktop (just hope the dock looks as pretty when on the right!) with Stacks. Stacks look very useful and will be very handy in organising stuff. Quick Look looks good as does Time Machine. It’ll be interesting to see how Time Machine compares to the .Mac’s Backup, my guess is that it’ll probably be better and a slicker implementation.
Overall the Keynote address by his Jobs-ness was good but it felt like it lacked something. The usual sparkle and ‘Oooh and Aaah’ moments weren’t there. Sure there was some impressive stuff announced and some shiny eye candy. I can understand how developers were annoyed at the lack of an SDK for the iPhone but that might change in time. You know Steve, he can pull stuff out of the bag at the last minute.
Biggest surprise for all though had to have been the announcement of Safari on Windows. I’d heard rumours of this in the days leading up to the keynote but didn’t really pay much attention. It seems to be all about the iPod Halo Effect though. Give Windows users the iPod, iTunes and an really good browser and maybe they’ll think ‘hey maybe I should check out buying a Mac.’ Wonder if it will pay off. Time (and market share) will tell.

So here it is. My first mix unleashed onto the world! I’m calling it “Steppin’ Into Summer” cause lets face it, we’re standing on the doorstep of the summer months and I for one am dying for it.
It’s a short mix cause I didn’t have too much time but it’s short and sweet. Go nuts and download it but do let me know what you think.
Download ↓ (51MB)
Update: If you tried to download the mix earlier today got an error message, apologies. I was using an older version of the download counter for Mint It’s fixed now so the download link above should now be fine… fingers crossed. If you can’t download it drop me a comment below or use the contact form. Cheers!

Today marks the 6th anniversary of my dear old blog. Time has really flown in and I honestly can’t believe it’s been here for the last 6 years. I wonder if I’ll make it to 10 years?
Stay tuned too because I’ll be dropping my first mixed podcast in the next few weeks or so. I’ve a feeling that it’ll be nice and summery!

Since I bought the iMac back in January, I’d been looking for an easy and elegant backup solution for OS X. Sure, Time Machine is coming with OS X 10.5 but I wanted to get started on the backups straight away. I’d tried Synk and Carbon Copy Cloner (both excellent and powerful in their own right) but something drew me to Apple’s Backup and then indeed .Mac. I’d never really ‘got’ the whole .mac thing. I mean I understood what it was and how it worked but it never seemed worth the (lets admit it, kind of expensive) price-tag of €99.00 per year.
So I decided to bite the bullet and sign-up for all this integrated .mac goodness I’d been reading about. So far, I have to say so-good. Backup is working as expected, elegantly! Though I’m still using Carbon Copy Cloner to make duplicate backups of some important stuff. Yes, I’ve become paranoid about backing up! The thoughts of loosing so many pictures, documents, files, old websites and music is too much to contemplate so it’s worth the effort to have good (and more importantly, regular) backups.
.Mac is definitely worth it if you have two or more Mac’s. Now that the PowerBook has a new lease of life, she is regularly enjoying syncing her bookmarks, calendars, mail accounts, keychains etc. etc. with the iMac. I like the whole idea of publishing calendars too. It’s actually started to make me plan things better. For example my working calendar now helps me keep track of what gigs I’m doing in the G and the like. Very handy indeed, and made handier when everything syncs to my phone so it’s with me on the move.
The iDisk is nice too, having an extra 1GB of online storage is always very handy and it works with Windows too for those occasions where I have to venture into the world of XP etc.
So all-in-all the first month has been quite positive, it’ll be interesting to see if I’ll want to fork over another €99 again next year. Time will tell I suppose!

I’ve updated the permalinks on the site so that they now read /year/month/post-name/ and not /year/month/day/post-name/. There really was no need to have the day in ther at all. I’m using the fantastic Permalinks Migration Plugin for Wordpress to take care of the redirects but let me know if you come across anything that’s broken! Cheers.

Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is man’s original virtue. It is through disobedience and rebellion that progress has been made.

How time flies eh? Another year has gone past in the blink of an eye and all of a sudden we find ourselves back in March for annual spectacular that is Alternative Miss Ireland. Another fantastic show as always with some really good contestants and some excellent performances. Johanna Ryde was crowned as the new Queen CailĂn but other notible and excellent performances came from Fanny & Pearl, Sheila Kenevil, Miss Sahara Bin Laden, Miss Carriage and Miss Salavation.
I had the pleasure of making a little appearance for Shirley’s number. Myself and Karen had a little cameo appearance in her routine and it was so much fun. The afters involved copious amounts of booze in the G, Spirit and other places before bedtime. There’s something to be said about rolling home from AMI at 7.30 in the morning while the rest of the city is heading to work.
Well done to all that took part, as always it was an amazing night and congrats to all involved. As Funtime Gustavo said, the AMI really is something that our community can truly be proud of.
As is customary, I’ve put the pictures online. Many thanks to the lovely Nigel and Laruen for taking them for me!
