Death of a Hard Drive

Hard DriveI woke up to a very sorry sight this morning. My poor iMac had had a little episode overnight while I was out. It seems that her hard drive died and has gone to the great computer dump in the sky. It was terribly sad. Nothing I tried brought her back to life. It was as simple as that. It’s kind of disappointing as she’s only about a year and a half old. That little flashing folder with the question mark scared the bejesus out of me but sure what can you do… these things happen.

Thankfully my backup paranoia wasn’t in vain. I’d recently done a fresh Time Machine backup and had also backed up my iTunes library to a separate hard drive so everything bar one or two files is present, correct and accounted for. Thank jebus for small mercies. At the moment my trusty old reliable G4 PowerBook has been elevated to pole position on my desk and is doing a sterling job at being my main machine until the iMac is back to her old self. I’ve imported my music and everything except two songs I downloaded after the daily backup is there. No matter, I can get them back again.

I thought that if anything like this did happen, I’d completely freek out. Quite the opposite actually. I’m quite calm about it. That’s only because everything is backed up though, had it not been it would be a totally different story that would require some valium. The other good thing is that I can now replace the 500GB drive with a 750GB drive (which is amazingly cheap!). All the more space for stuff. Hooray for more stuff!

So the motto of the story is; backup, backup, backup! I can’t say it enough!
