Leopard & WWDC

Leopard desktop
So earlier this week, we got a more up-to-date look at Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Some stuff was the same as the preview we got at last year’s WWDC but there was some more info on hand this year. It’s hard to judge something until you’ve actually used it but the OS certainly looks impressive. Some of the new feature’s I’m looking forward to are the new desktop (just hope the dock looks as pretty when on the right!) with Stacks. Stacks look very useful and will be very handy in organising stuff. Quick Look looks good as does Time Machine. It’ll be interesting to see how Time Machine compares to the .Mac’s Backup, my guess is that it’ll probably be better and a slicker implementation.

Overall the Keynote address by his Jobs-ness was good but it felt like it lacked something. The usual sparkle and ‘Oooh and Aaah’ moments weren’t there. Sure there was some impressive stuff announced and some shiny eye candy. I can understand how developers were annoyed at the lack of an SDK for the iPhone but that might change in time. You know Steve, he can pull stuff out of the bag at the last minute.

Biggest surprise for all though had to have been the announcement of Safari on Windows. I’d heard rumours of this in the days leading up to the keynote but didn’t really pay much attention. It seems to be all about the iPod Halo Effect though. Give Windows users the iPod, iTunes and an really good browser and maybe they’ll think ‘hey maybe I should check out buying a Mac.’ Wonder if it will pay off. Time (and market share) will tell.

I will be moving to Leopard. For me features like “Spaces” and “Stacking” are too good. I love the idea of having more than one desktop on a 13″ Laptop.

As for the iPhone i dont really see it working in the uk. A lot of its features rely heavily on net access. Also, the whole, “develop your apps today thing” jobs is simply talking about ajax websites launched on the phone, not actual software apps. It’s interesting.

Clearly i still want one.

Safari for Mac i a great idea, especially in light of how much trouble Vista has caused.

Im still waiting for a Brushed metal Imac and a super small Ibook.

Will i still get a deal, Shamone?

Spaces is very cool and Stacks will be very useful. I’d say the iPhone will be quite a hit in Europe. My only problem with it is that it’s not 3G. If I were to get one, I’d have to switch carrier and that’s just awkward. But needless to say I still want one. Can’t wait to play with one in the flesh.

I’d say the iMac will get a refresh soon. It’s been almost a year since it got an update. I’d be raging though cause my iMac would be out of date! :)

“Will I still get a deal Davina?” Our survey said… No!
