Leopard & WWDC

So earlier this week, we got a more up-to-date look at Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Some stuff was the same as the preview we got at last year’s WWDC but there was some more info on hand this year. It’s hard to judge something until you’ve actually used it but the OS certainly looks impressive. Some of the new feature’s I’m looking forward to are the new desktop (just hope the dock looks as pretty when on the right!) with Stacks. Stacks look very useful and will be very handy in organising stuff. Quick Look looks good as does Time Machine. It’ll be interesting to see how Time Machine compares to the .Mac’s Backup, my guess is that it’ll probably be better and a slicker implementation.
Overall the Keynote address by his Jobs-ness was good but it felt like it lacked something. The usual sparkle and ‘Oooh and Aaah’ moments weren’t there. Sure there was some impressive stuff announced and some shiny eye candy. I can understand how developers were annoyed at the lack of an SDK for the iPhone but that might change in time. You know Steve, he can pull stuff out of the bag at the last minute.
Biggest surprise for all though had to have been the announcement of Safari on Windows. I’d heard rumours of this in the days leading up to the keynote but didn’t really pay much attention. It seems to be all about the iPod Halo Effect though. Give Windows users the iPod, iTunes and an really good browser and maybe they’ll think ‘hey maybe I should check out buying a Mac.’ Wonder if it will pay off. Time (and market share) will tell.
