.Mac

.Mac Since I bought the iMac back in January, I’d been looking for an easy and elegant backup solution for OS X. Sure, Time Machine is coming with OS X 10.5 but I wanted to get started on the backups straight away. I’d tried Synk and Carbon Copy Cloner (both excellent and powerful in their own right) but something drew me to Apple’s Backup and then indeed .Mac. I’d never really ‘got’ the whole .mac thing. I mean I understood what it was and how it worked but it never seemed worth the (lets admit it, kind of expensive) price-tag of €99.00 per year.

So I decided to bite the bullet and sign-up for all this integrated .mac goodness I’d been reading about. So far, I have to say so-good. Backup is working as expected, elegantly! Though I’m still using Carbon Copy Cloner to make duplicate backups of some important stuff. Yes, I’ve become paranoid about backing up! The thoughts of loosing so many pictures, documents, files, old websites and music is too much to contemplate so it’s worth the effort to have good (and more importantly, regular) backups.

.Mac is definitely worth it if you have two or more Mac’s. Now that the PowerBook has a new lease of life, she is regularly enjoying syncing her bookmarks, calendars, mail accounts, keychains etc. etc. with the iMac. I like the whole idea of publishing calendars too. It’s actually started to make me plan things better. For example my working calendar now helps me keep track of what gigs I’m doing in the G and the like. Very handy indeed, and made handier when everything syncs to my phone so it’s with me on the move.

The iDisk is nice too, having an extra 1GB of online storage is always very handy and it works with Windows too for those occasions where I have to venture into the world of XP etc.

So all-in-all the first month has been quite positive, it’ll be interesting to see if I’ll want to fork over another €99 again next year. Time will tell I suppose!

“.Mac is definitely worth it if you have two or more Mac’s.” - I’m not so sure..

I paid for it for the first 3 years it was out then dropped it as I wasn’t using enough of it; I’d preferred if Apple had split dotmacs use and costs into parts.

Then last year I finally bought a 2nd mac to go with the powerbook - and I realized what was happening - (Apple): “Thank you for buying a 2nd mac from us - now if you’ll just hand over 100 notes a year more we’ll connect them for you too..”

And that’s when the whole thing became really unacceptable.

I don’t think I’m being tight here. It’s a must-have to synchronize 2 or more machines and I’ve managed it by using 2 or 3 inde utilities (SlingShot and iGet) but imo Apple should be encouraging and thanking more buyers by making iSync what it could be.

A little known tip is you can find .mac discounted online through retailers. Do not buy it form Apple. The last two years I purchased it I saved approximately 30% from the list price.

@ richo: I do agree that it is a little on the expesnsive side. And yes asking for $99/€99 a year to sync a couple of computers together is a bit over the top when there are other apps on the market that will effectively do the same thing.

However, the attraction and the beauty of .Mac is the way Apple integrates everything. Everthing works seemlessly in the background. That’s what makes it so damn aluring! :) There’s definitely room for improvement don’t get me wrong. Hopefully any improvements that might be coming down the line will only enhance what .Mac has to offer. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

@ Eytan: I’ll remember that when it comes to forking out again next year. Any money saving is always greatly appreciated! :)

Been using .Mac for the last 6 months or so.
Ideal for syncing home computers and the 4 that I use in work, not exactly perfect and sometimes takes a few goes to make it work. Throw in 2 mobiles and it gets even more fun.

Not 100% happy with backup to be honest. Starting out with one full back up and then incremental backups after that. Builds up over time, and no way to consolidate it.

The seamless integration of programs does do wonders though!

I can see where the idea of incremental backups comes from but your right, after time they do build up. It would be great if there was a way to consolidate them every once in a while. Just to keep things nice and tidy! :)

I have found a rather cheep 400Gig external drive.
Alas not Firewire. But sure, USB2 is just as fast.

Ooooh very nice! I’m probably gonna need another one soon as the current one is filling up fast!
