Quote of the Day
“Remember, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in high heels.”

I’ve decided to set myself a deadline. There will be a brand spanking new Podcast here for you to download by the end of this week. Definitely! Get your ears ready!
Any requests?
Update: OK so I didn’t quite hit my deadline (story of my life). I blame a completely mental weekend for my tardiness. I’ll get it done for the end of this week instead.
I like an escalator because an escalator can never break, it can only become stairs. There would never be an escalator temporarily out of order sign, only an escalator temporarily stairs. Sorry for the convenience.
Imagine my delight last month when I heard rumours that the iPhone was coming to Ireland. Finally we were about to get hold of one of the most hotly anticipated technology items in recent memory. And it was coming quickly too. No waiting months after an announcement for it to actually arrive and be in our hands. Sadly, it was not to be so simple. Before Apple had even officially announced that Ireland was getting the iPhone, O2 let the cat out of the bag during their results announcement. The iPhone would be available on the 14th of March at a cost of €399 for the 8GB version and €499 for the 16GB version. Leaving aside the conversion price from dollars to euro and the astronomical difference in price between Ireland and the US, O2 had another surprise in store for prospective Irish iPhone owners; the tariffs. No sooner had O2 CEO Danuta Gray called her prospective new customers freaks, the tariffs were published.
This is where things get ugly.

It’s been a week since the annual travesty of taste and decency and I think I’ve only just recovered from it now. And no I’m not talking about a normal Friday night out, it can only be the Alternative Miss Ireland. Gay Christmas as it were. It was an incredibly fun day/night and even though I didn’t get to see as much of the show as I normally would, I still had an amazing time. Many thanks to Shirley for giving me a spot in her number. It’s weird to be looking in at the stage and then 10 minutes later to be looking out at the audience. Weird? Yes. But fun? Definitely yes!
Congratulations to our new queen, Ms Sheila Fitzpatrick. I only got to see her opening number but it was a good one. Other notable entries were Ms Gaza Strip & Ms Geneva Summit, Ms Bunny, Donegal Catch & Faybelene.
As always, Panti’s opening monologue was top notch and her sketch was only hilarious! Here’s to another great show and here’s to next year!
Photos are up on Flickr.
So after about a year and a half or so of using Paul’s 281 theme, I decided it was time for a bit of a refresh. I’ve switched to [a modified & slightly hacked version of] Derek Powazek’s gorgeous DePo Skinny theme.
It’s a very light and fresh design and is a return to the single column view of some years ago. Advertising is gone for now, it wasn’t really serving any use and I think the page looks fresher without it. We’ll see how it pans out after a while.
I’ve also added my Flickr stream to the top of the homepage. I’ve started using Flickr more and more recently so expect more photos to go up from time to time.
I’ve some upcoming projects launching in the next couple of weeks, more on that soon. But I’ve been spurred back into blogging again. I’ve loads to write about so expect to see lots more here soon.
“You try wagging these puppies around a while and see if you don’t have back problems”
Dolly Parton on her recent back problems.
I was working on a new design for the site the other day on my local machine when for some strange reason I couldn’t load the site. Nothing I tried worked. Even the main root folder wasn’t showing with the default Apache page. ‘Shite’ I thought to myself. I tried re-starting web sharing, nothing. I tried repairing permissions, nothing. Uh oh! All the data was still in the Webserver folder so I couldn’t figure it out. Then I remembered that I had been playing around with Virtual Hosts and their configuration. A couple of days earlier I had setup a virtual host on my machine and promptly forgot about it. Lots of editing of httpd.conf and http-vhosts.conf. Turns out my editing was flawed and I’d rightly buggered the files.
Luckily Time Machine had a pre-edit copy of each file backed up on my external hard drive. I had changed my Time Machine setup to only backup once every 24 hours as opposed to the default hourly backups. The file from the day before the edits were made was backed up, ready and waiting to be restored. Two clicks later and the files were restored and Apache was working normally. So quick and yet so simple. It’s this pure ease of use that makes Apple leaders in their field.
And now that Time Capsule has launched, Time Machine will become even more useful. Especially for notebooks but even handier for backing up multiple machines to one place. All wirelessly with almost no effort required on the users part. Ingenious!
As we all know, everyone should backup, backup regularly and ensure those backups work, thankfully Apple have made this process so simple that there really is no excuse for not backing up your data. As the song said, “you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.”
So indeed it is December and things have been pretty quiet around here lately. It’s entirely my fault. I’ve just been so busy with work, DJ-ing & moving house lately that the site has been put on the back-burner. I’ve also been thinking about what I want to do with the site in the future. Half of me is tempted to archive everything and just start again. A fresh start might be what’s needed.
On the Podcast side of things, they’re not dead. Admittedly there has only been one so far (which seems to have been generally well-received) but that’s going to change in the New Year. I’ve a couple of mixes already done that I’d like to get online and there’s some new stuff I want to get working on soon too. Unfortunately, we’re still waiting on our new broadband connection in the new house so for the moment uploading long and large mixes isn’t possible right now. Here’s hoping eircom and Smart Telecom get their fingers out early in the new year and soon we’ll have nice and speedy access to the web.
So for now, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and I hope you have a brilliant New Year! Until 2008 and what I’m dubbing, “the year Anto gets his arse in gear!” :)
I had a visit from taoiseach.gov.ie today. I wonder if it was Bertie dropping by for a nose round. If so, do drop me a line Mr Taoiseach. I’d like to ask you some questions.
